The Porter-Allen Insurance Company has been a pillar in the Key West community since 1891. Entering their office at 513 Southard Street, you are embraced with a feeling of welcome as you’re greeted with a warm smile. The wood walls are lined with history in the form of photos and evidence of extensive community involvement. David Freeman was destined to become a part of the insurance business when his father purchased it in 1927. He was born in Key West in 1932 and can trace his Conch history back in great detail.”My ancestors were present when the Flagler railroad first entered Key West on January 22, 1912,”he states proudly.
After graduating from St. Joseph’s School, David went on to study accounting at the University of Miami. He and his brother became partners with their father in 1957 and David’s daughter Elizabeth joined Porter-Allen in 1991 and is now serving as president. “I still work every day, I love it, it doesn’t even feel like work,” he says. Freeman has total confidence in his daughter and enjoys being able to step back and let her take the reins.”I like being in a supporting role,” Family is David’s world, “There’s nothing more important or enjoyable,” He still has lunch with his daughter every day.
Although Freeman likes working at Porter-Allen, he has many hobbies and interests. “I love listening to international radio stations, you can learn a lot from other countries perspectives,” he explained. He is a self-taught broadcast engineer who enjoyed building radio transmitters and antennae. He knows all aspects of running a radio business and in 1977 purchased 107.1. Freeman’s son Doug shares his father’s passion for radio broadcasting and is still in the business.
